This study analyzes the critical factors influencing the adoption of IoT technologies in the primary sector, where digital transformation is still emerging despite its economic and environmental importance. Using a conceptual framework that classifies adoption factors into technological, organizational, and strategic dimensions, the study identifies drivers, enablers, and barriers through a literature review and a multi-case study of three Peruvian companies: aquaculture, hydrocarbon transport, and agribusiness. The findings reveal that operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and sustainability are common drivers, though their impact varies by context. Effective adoption depends on enablers such as rural connectivity, system interoperability, digital leadership, and collaboration with technology providers. Key barriers include infrastructure constraints, cultural resistance to change, a shortage of digital talent, and operational challenges in remote environments. As a result, the study uses a contextualized conceptual framework and empirical evidence on critical adoption factors, offering guidance for corporate strategies and public policies aimed at accelerating digital transformation in the primary sector. It concludes that strategic interventions will favor technological gaps closing, strengthening long-term sustainability and competitiveness of these industries.
