ABSTRACTAmong all the ways for harnessing ocean energy, wave energy is the most promising one due to its high power density and the number of existing projects under development. Although the first attempts to exploit wave energy go back to similar periods of other renewable energy sources, no particular technology has yet proved to be successful. This article introduces a classification of the various devices being developed at present. Also, there are reviewed the different international and national strategic actions set in place in order to promote technology development of wave energy extraction. Finally, the future perspectives of this kind of energy source are pointed out. Key words: wave energy converters, ocean energy, renewable energy sources.
