TRIZ es el acrónimo en ruso de "Teoría de Resolución de Problemas Inventivos". La metodología TRIZ nació en Rusia en los años 40 al final de la 2ª Guerra Mundial de la mano de Genrich S. Altshuller, a quién puede considerarse como el padre del TRIZ. En los años 90, Boris Zlotin y Alla Zusman (dos de los discípulos iniciales y aventajados de Altshuller) y su equipo de investigadores se asocian a Zion Bar-El y otros socios capitalistas creando en EEUU la empresa Ideation International Inc. Actualmente Ideation tiene en plantilla a un gran porcentaje (85%) de los principales investigadores y expertos en TRIZ del mundo y de su trabajo se ha originado la moderna teoría de TRIZ, a la que han registrado como I-TRIZ (Ideation TRIZ).
LABEIN entra en contacto con Ideation en 1997 y empieza a lanzar tina serie de actividades de formación y asesoría. En 1998 se llega a un acuerdo con Ideation para trabajar conjuntamente en la promoción y desarrollo de I-TRIZ en España y Portugal.
