This article performs a comparative study of people certification systems by competencies, devoted to assess engineers. The models analyzed are mainly those used in the European Union Countries. Different regulatory bodies have been used to analyze the following aspects: requirements, levels, accreditation of the system, recognition by professional organizations, among others. The main conclusions of this study highlight the increasing demand for these certification systems and their unification tendency as a means to obtain a single certification model in order to broaden recognition and facilitate the mobility of professionals. Finally, the Spanish model is presented and compared with the above model, and the entry requirements are objectively revised in order to obtain a widespread recognition. Keywords: competences, certification, engineer, development
