In 1896 , French scientist and physicist Becquerel accidentally discovered natural radioactivity , while working in his lab and carelessly leave some uranium salts with photographic plates that were later evenings , despite being protected from sunlight . After several trials , found that the uranium was causing the fogging of the plates , so thus unwittingly became the " father of nuclear energy." Four decades later, in 1938 , a team of German researchers formed by Hahn, Strassmann , Meitner and Frisch discovered nuclear fission , through the identification of the element barium as a result of cleavage of the uranium nucleus . Uranium, to capture one of the neutron that is bombarded , was split into two fragments , while enjoying a large amount of energy , much greater than could be produced with any other previously known nuclear reaction .
