The CERN Large Hadron Collider is a complex machine consisting of a 27 km underground ring where protons circulate in opposite directions and collide at a new energy frontier. The goal is to progress in the understanding of the fundamental structure of matter. Large detectors surround the collision points. They are capable of detecting all the particles produced in the proton collisions. The first 10 years of operation of the machine lead to the discovery of the Higgs boson, en important milestone for particle physics. Spanish research groups and industry participated in the construction. This participation generates returns. The future High Luminosity LHC upgrade will provide new opportunities.
