Lake Kivu is a wide expanse of fresh water that is part of the chain of lakes in the African depression, forming border between Rwanda and Zaire (former Belgian Congo); 2,700 km2 and located less than 1,400 m above sea level in the basin is about 2 million people and their excess water drains into Lake Tanganyika, located further south, which in turn makes border Burundi and Tanzania to Zaire.
