ABSTRACT The road transport growth has increased those problems that threaten its sustainability: accidents exhaust emissions, congestion, etc. Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) provide solutions based on electronics, automatic control and communications technologies. In this complex environment where users of different characteristics share the same infrastructure, improvements that cooperative systems (V2V, V2I and management centres) produce are evaluated. Furthermore, main obstacles that make their quick and wide implementation difficult are analyzed. Key words: Transport, intelligent systems, sustainability, cooperative systems
