ABSTRACT:Operator training is the best way to reduce occupational risks in any type of industrial activity. In the case of forklift driving, good training can prevent accidents that can result in large economic and social costs. This paper presents a forklift simulator developed for the training of forklift drivers and reduction of occupational risks. The simulator is preceded by a thorough study of occupational risks associated with forklift driving, so the virtual environment and the exercises to be performed are designed with the aim of training the operator at risk situations. Two versions of the simulator have been implemented, having a different level of immersion: the first one can be installed on PC platforms and therefore it offers the possibility of having training classrooms. The second one provides an increased level of immersion by a structure of monitors and the use of controls of a real forklift. The simulator is used in forklift driving courses given by the Specific Vocational Training Institute (IEFPS) Miguel Altuna de Bergara and they are approved by Osalan (Basque Institute for Occupational Safety and Health), with a growing demand from they were instaled.
