The electricity sector is a key sector in economy countries and development countries. It is difficult to find scientific articles that convey a clear and simple picture of the birth of this sector. The main objective of this article is to give a clear view of those early days, analyzing the different perspectives present (technological, economic, legal...), covering the period from its beginnings until 1945. In addition, a comparative analysis of what happened in Spain and other Western countries is done. A first stage is characterized by the existence of small businesses locally, by the struggle between the DC or AC, and thermoelectricity or hydroelectricity. A second stage in the implementation of AC power and hydroelectricity preponderantly, and the tendency to the formation of oligopolies is distinguished. After viewing of the first steps in the sector, it is found that there are some general characteristics that are seen in most countries, but also certain peculiarities of each country.
