In the historical evolution of industrial maintenance, it has changed from the first phases based on knowledge of the very survival of physical assets, until now where the requirement of knowledge and technical component cause a constant challenge to maintenance organizations, and therefore to the companies themselves. In this article, it is intended to review the evolution of the maintenance in a concise manner to understand and emphasize its relationship with reference to the management of knowledge and experience, necessaries for the performance of one of the most strategic activities in the sustainability and durability of all physical assets. With the review of the nature of the industrial maintenance in relation to its historical evolution the basic elements that define its nature are fixed and how it has been evolving as its knowledge management has improved.Keywords: Industrial maintenance, knowledge management, process failure, operational availability
