FROM THE DOMINO TO THE SWISS CHEESE. THE EVOLUTION IN THE SAFETY FIELDABSTRACTThe safety field has undergone a great advance over the past decades; concepts such as accidents prevention have given way to broader ones such as incidents prevention and loss control. Accidents models based on a simple chain of events have been overtaken by more complex models. The safety field besides of physics (mechanics, electricity ...) includes disciplines such as Ergonomics, Psychology, Hygiene and Medicine.Internationally, these advances have not appeared in an orderly way, but have emerged as individual solutions for reducing accidents, making it difficult to get an overview of the available techniques, and the interrelationship between them. This paper present a new model based on three layer to frame new developments and concepts that have emerged within the safety field (Human Factor, Safety Culture, Behavior Based Safety,…), in a way that it works as a map to help to understand the safety performance of each company, and the improvement techniques available.
