ABSTRACT The refrigerating vans of low capacity in which the cabin is connected with the cargo compartment, generally located the condensing equipment of the refrigerating system in the ceiling of the vehicle in a fixed way. This work shows the design of a retractable system for the condenser with the purpose of improving the aerodynamics of the vehicle and so reducing the fuel needs. When the van travels empty or with nonrefrigerating load, the system is in its lowest position, otherwise the refrigerating system is in raised position (in operation). The work includes a study of the existing regulations, patent analysis, market study, study of refrigerating systems and aerodynamic aspects. Finally, an economic study has been made to know the average fuel savings due to the aerodynamic improvement, for a representative van. According to this study, we estimate that the necessary investment could be recovered in less than 57000 km. Key words: refrigerating system, vans, condenser, aerodynamics, fuel savings.
