ABSTRACT This paper develops a theoretical framework for an explanation of duality in innovation processes and its relationship with specific types of innovation competences: exploration and exploitation. Both exploration and exploitation have emerged as central issues in organizational adaptation research, yet they are fundamentally incompatible. ambidextrous organizational forms and punctuated equilibrium provide the context for their coexistence. Key words: Ambidexterity, Punctuated Equilibrium, Exploration, Exploitation.
