Residual stresses are internal loads occurring in elements and mechanical structures as a result of the manufacturing process with which they are manufactured. If these stresses are relevant and add to the stresses generated by the application of mechanical forces, reduce the capacity of the element to its normal operation, and if they were not considered in the design stage, life useful may be much shorter than expected.One of the manufacturing processes used extensively in industrial applications and generates high residual stresses, is the welded joint. In this paper, a systematic experimental methodology to measure and analyze residual stresses levels is presented. The analysis was realized at four points of welded joints with electrical arc in samples of stainless steel AISI 347 of 3 inches thick, using the method of blind hole and electrical extensometers of variable resistance. Experimental results shows that residual stresses in some points of the samples reached levels greater than yield stress of the analyzed plate.
