ABSTRACTDemand side management aims to modify the normal electricity consumption patterns of end users. This article describes the ways in which demand side management can help the operation of the power system, and lists the most innovative types of demand side management strategies. Past and present efforts in this field in the Spanish power system are also reviewed, together with some of the latest international research and development efforts. Special emphasis is laid on an automatic demand response initiative that is being carried out by LBNL in California.Key words: Demand side management, demand response, power system operation, load curve, peak demand, energy efficiency.
