The high levels of volatility in generation, given the growing weight of variable renewable resources, as well as in demand, given the growing weight of the electrification of the economy, causes continuous growth in the needs for flexibility in electrical systems. This circumstance encourages researchers, regulators and the sector itself to seek the best solutions to transform operation models, based on complementary services from centralized generation, to others in which flexibility from connected energy resources plays a relevant role. to distribution networks. Due to literature has generalist visions or, on the contrary, very specific ones in this regard, this article presents a harmonized vision in which several contexts of analysis have been considered, and the main key points of the current evolution have been reasoned about the active distribution networks according to the review carried out of publications by specialized authors, related organizations and regulation in the EU, concluding with the proposal of a new conceptual paradigm of "Advanced Electrical System".
