Previous research has demonstrated that Building Information Modeling (BIM) is not a new concept, and its adoption is becoming a key factor in the efficiency and international competitiveness of the construction industry. The sector is moving towards a new conceptual framework that requires new requirements and technological, social, economic and environmental capabilities. The construction appears linked to new concepts such as innovation, sustainability, rehabilitation and maintenance, and new technologies applied to architectural and urban design and construction, industrialization and efficiency in the management of the whole process.New working methods such as BIM manifest themselves as catalysts for change, and open new job opportunities within the sector. This paper aims to provide an overview of what is Building Information Modeling involved in the industry: evolution, major concepts, barriers and opportunities in the implementation stage. This work provides useful information for professionals who consider implementing BIM on their projects. This is especially important after the Spanish Ministry of Public Works and Transport has decided to take leadership role in the process of adoption of the BIM methodology since early 2015.Key Words: Building Information Modeling, architecture, engineering and construction, BIM
