This article reviews future needs and objectives within the field of energy storage and the role of batteries in it. The study focuses on describing the challenges and needs of batteries for electromobility and network applications, as well as the degree of development and future projection of different technologies that are being considered as the "batteries of the future". Finally, battery projects under the Horizon 2020 programme are reviewed.
