The benzol appears as part of the coal distillation gases, from which it is separated by passing them through a substance called Active Carton, which, by virtue of a phenomenon of surface tension, retains within its pores the benzole without That there is chemical reaction or dissolution proper.Active carbon is a substantially pure coal devoid of its hydrogenated compounds and most of its mineral compounds by appropriate treatment. It is characterized by its great internal surface, of capillary nature, in relation to its mass. It collects the benzol and other bodies when it is crossed by the gas, and is regenerated by heating it, thus evaporating the benzol, which is condensed in another apparatus.
