More stable perovskite–silicon solar cells

A team at the National University of Singapore has reported a key improvement in the operational stability of perovskite–silicon tandem solar cells, seen as one of the most promising technologies to surpass the efficiency limits of current photovoltaic modules. These devices use a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) to connect the perovskite absorber to the silicon cell, but this layer had been identified as a weakness at elevated temperatures. The current work analyses the degradation mechanism in detail and proposes a new formulation of the contact layer that is more resistant to heat.?

Accelerated ageing tests show that the tandem cells retain more than 96% of their initial performance after 1,200 hours of continuous operation at 65 °C under illumination, a very demanding condition for perovskite materials. This level of stability, still uncommon in the perovskite family, brings these solutions closer to the reliability required for commercial products with 20–25 year warranties. The redesigned contact is achieved without adding complex fabrication steps, which facilitates industrial adoption if process scalability is confirmed.?

From an engineering standpoint, the result strengthens the case for tandem architectures in high-power, area-constrained applications such as industrial roofs, ground-mounted plants on expensive land, and integration into existing infrastructure. It also provides a general strategy to tackle other failure modes in perovskite devices by analysing critical interfaces and reinforcing them chemically. The advance helps narrow the gap between laboratory efficiency records and the durability requirements imposed by large-scale photovoltaic operators.
