Industrial projects are starting 2026 under a level of cost pressure that can no longer be described as transitory. The Engineering and Construction Cost Indicator, produced by PEG and S&P Global Market Intelligence, places the headline index at 62.6 points in February, up from 56.4 in January, confirming broad-based increases in materials, equipment and specialized labor. A reading above 50 signals rising prices, and the fact that all major categories remain in expansion territory shows that the sector is facing a new cost baseline.

The materials and equipment sub-index climbed to 62.2, with particularly sharp increases in alloy steel pipe, ANSI pumps and compressors, as well as structural steel and carbon steel pipe, where six-month expectations point to jumps of more than 20 points in the indicator. At the same time, subcontracted labor rose to 63.5, driven by strong wage pressures in mechanical and I&E (instrumentation and electrical) trades, especially in the western and southern United States.

More worrying than the current level is the trajectory. The six-month expectations indicator rebounded to 75.6, with a strong surge in materials and an even higher level of 81.3 for subcontracted labor. In practice, this means that industrial CAPEX budgets approved only a few months ago can quickly become outdated if they do not include contingency buffers and price-adjustment clauses.

For industrial and project engineers, the message is clear: schedules, contracts and procurement strategies must be redesigned, prioritizing critical phases, framework agreements with suppliers and designs that are less material-intensive in volatile categories, while also exploring modular and prefabricated solutions that reduce exposure to field labor.
