"La falta de calidad de un producto se mide por las pérdidas totales que genera a la sociedad, a partir de su expedición desde el centro donde ha sido fabricado" (G. Taguchi). Estas pérdidas no son únicamente soportadas por el fabricante (costes de fabricación, devoluciones, costes en garantía, etc.), sino también por el usuario (reparaciones fuera de garantía, pérdidas en tiempo por no disponer de la función que el producto debe aportar, insatisfacción por ello, etc.). Con el agravante de que las pérdidas que sufre el consumidor, tarde o temprano las va a revertir sobre el fabricante, dejando de adquirir productos de éste. Por contra, si el usuario no tiene problemas con el producto, será fiel a su fabricante.
