RESEARCH ARTICLES

In the search of new and clean energy sources, the use of geothermal energy, particularly by means of Ground Source Heat Pumps, is established as a sustainable and efficient alternative for heating and cooling buildings. In order to better understand the research progress around GSHP technology use in buildings, this article brings together an in-depth bibliometric review regarding the use of geothermal energy and GSHP in buildings, specifically analysing general trends in the scientific production of the last 30 years. An analysis of the development of the main trends is studied, as well as the evolution of annual publications and fluctuations in the scientific community’s interests. Moreover, the most influential authors, institutions, journals and countries are highlighted, and a detailed keyword and cooccurrence evaluation is performed in seek of the investigation’s thematic evolution. This review offers an overview of the body of knowledge around geothermal energy and the use of GSHP, and aims to help future academics, professionals and regulators gain a broad understanding of the topic. sophisticated analyses of system integration and optimization, currently focusing on sustainability and broader energy system integration. Based on this thematic evolution, particularly the trends shown in the most recent period, the focus is likely to intensify towards enhanced system integration with smart grids, enabling geothermal systems to act as flexible loads or sources and contributing to grid stability, multi-objective optimization and predictive control, deepening into sophisticated optimization techniques that balance energy efficiency, economic viability, environmental impact and user comfort, AI and big data applications, based on the strong focus on “simulation” and “optimization” keywords, designed towards system monitoring, fault detection, predictive maintenance and optimized operational strategies.
