ABSTRACT:
The set of technologies named "Big Data" represent one of the most popular innovations in the field of information technologies during the recent years, not only for their impact in specialized contexts but also in general media. Their current popularity might lead us to think that the cause for their origin is quite recent. However, the idea of exploiting datasets with a business vision and many of the tools and technologies used for it date back a few decades. When did such technologies start to be used? When do we begin to talk about Big Data, and what caused its origin? Which are the main agents driving the creation of these technologies, and which have been the main milestones during their development? This paper addresses all these key questions, covering the evolution since the first tools and technologies in the field of business data analytics until the current state of development of Big Data technologies, clarifying the origin and meaning of the main key concepts in this context.
