ABSTRACT: The objective of this paper was to propose a user centered design approach for ad hoc interactions with security feedback provided by Identity Management Applications (IMAs). The proposed approach helped to establish a reliable starting point for well-designed security feedback based on users’ tasks, goals, needs, and values, which were identified by observing 35 volunteers interacting with 8 IMAs freely available on-line. This information was reinforced by integrating HCISEC criteria and was structured in a design-guidelines fashion. The proposal was reviewed and refined by ten experts and then materialized as a semi-functional digital mock-up prototype. The prototype was finally evaluated by 72 participants through a 22-day diary-study where participants compared the prototype (anonymously presented) against the selected 8 IMAs interfaces. Study results demonstrated that the proposed approach is capable of encouraging integration of good design virtues in security feedback conveyed by IMAs, which could be easily adapted for ad hoc interactions contributing to satisfactory user experience. Keywords: User-centered Design, Identity Management Applications, Security Information Feedback, Design guidelines, Usability studies, User experience, Human-Computer Interaction, ad hoc Interactions.
