Driven by the high volume of industrial robot installations, the world reached a new record of 3.9 million operational robots in 2022.

The top most automated countries measured by robot density are: The Republic of Korea (1,012 robots per 10,000 employees), Singapore (730 units) and Germany (415 units). Robot density is the number of operational industrial robots relative to the number of employees.
Of these operational robots, just over 550,000 were installed in 2022, the second year in a row to exceed 500,000 new robots installed. The new global average robot density reached an all-time high of 151 robots per 10,000 employees, more than double the figure measured just six years ago.
Asia has a robot density of 168 robots per 10,000 employees in manufacturing. Globally, the economies of Korea, Singapore, Japan, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan are among the top ten most automated countries. The European Union has a robot density of 208 units per 10,000 employees, with Germany, Sweden and Switzerland in the top ten. The robot density in the Americas is 120, but looking at North America alone it is 188 units per 10,000 employees, with the United States among the top ten most automated countries in manufacturing.
The preponderance of the Korean economy is based on two major activities: a strong electronics industry and an extensive automotive industry. Singapore follows despite being a small country with a very low number of employees, but highly automated. Germany is in third place with a highly diversified manufacturing industry. Next, Japan is the leading country in robot manufacturing and has grown at a rate of 7% in recent years. China moved up to fifth place in 2021 and retained this position in 2022. It continues to grow, while maintaining a high level of employment. Spain, almost solely due to its automotive industry, is in a modest 20th place, without having intensively addressed robotisation in other sectors.
Artificial Intelligence is believed to mark a new field in the application of robotics and its software developers will be able to create more personalised and optimised solutions for various tasks.
