ABSTRACT: In this work a rule-based control strategy is proposed in order to update the management of a Wastewater Treatment Plant by means of the alternating aeration/non-aeration process with the aim of improving the removal rate of the pollutant nitrogen and phosphorous the plant receives along with a decrease in the electric energy consumption. This process is to be carried out without jeopardizing the success in removing the organic matter and suspended solids the current regulations impose about water quality driven into surface streams. The control system has been tested in an actual plant and an efficiency of 85 % in nitrogen removal was obtained as against 35 % previously reached. For phosphorous the removal efficiency raised from 13% to 55%. An electric energy saving of 31% was also reached. On the other hand the organic matter removing rate showed a little increase from 90% to 92%.
