ABSTRACT:
The aim of this paper is to assess how the practices and tools of lean manufacturing (LM) contribute to a greener company by means of a review of the literature with a view to achieve a better understanding of the research on the Lean & Green concept, while what has been proved and where inconsistencies exist, facilitating the work of new researchers with our compilation and proposing future research.
We can conclude that discrepancies in the results achieved by the studied papers can be attributed to the lack of uniformity in their approaches and the variables used. The practices and tools of LM may help achieve a greener factory, but the relations between LM, environmental improvements and company results are neither immediate, nor certain, nor one-way, nor easy to measure. Human resources are paramount and better results are achieved when these practices and tools are part of the company’s strategy.
There is room to go deeply into the relations between LM (or its practices and tools), human aspects, environmental sustainability and financial performance. Research could be extended to other fields. To be aware of such relations and limitations will help practitioners take better decisions.

Keywords: lean, TPM, sustainability, environment, literature review
