ABSTRACT:
The commitment of companies to Open Innovation raises differences between the methods used for the management of so-called traditional projects —PMP, BIPMA, PRINCE2 and ISO 21500, among others—, and the methods used in the management of R&D projects. Projects carried out by business-academia consortia, which have been financed by public funds, require a review of project management practices, but the analysis of this issue in the context of Open Innovation has been overlooked by the literature. Considering this gap in the literature, this article analyses the relationships between management practices carried out in R&D projects and the results obtained in them from the Open Innovation perspective. For that purpose, using both quantitative and qualitative research methods the paper analyses the practices of 60 Spanish companies that participated in R&D projects financed by the European Commission. This study contributes to the project management literature, combining Open Innovation with PMBOK in the Front End phase of R&D projects. It therefore represents the best opportunity to positively influence the outcome of the project.

Keywords: Open Innovation, Front-End Phase, Project Management.
